Swingate Royal Observer Corps Monitoring Post

The Royal Observer Corps Posts were used during the Cold War in the event of a nuclear attack. Three men were posted here at a time, and it was their duty to pinpoint the location of a nuclear detonation and to monitor its power and the direction of radioactive fallout. Each post had telephone and radio links to the main co-ordination centre. This post was opened in May 1962 and closed only a few years later, in October 1968.
