Dunkirk Chain Home Buried Reserve
At Dunkirk, chain home station were two buried reserves which would have been used in the event of the main transmitters being unusable following an attack from enemy aircraft. On the day of the Sub Brit visit, this buried reserve was flooded to a depth of approximately eight feet and even after being dredged for eight hours, water still remained at a depth of about eight inches. access to them is restricted. This means that we cannot be sure of the finer details at Swingate, nor what modifications it’s continued use into the Cold War period right up to the present day have brought about. As the buildings at Dunkirk are no longer in use, we can at least get a very good idea of how Swingate would probably have looked during the Second World War.
