Tunbridge Wells Battle Headquarters

Construction of these tunnels had been completed by 1941, although there is no direct reference for their purpose. Locals held with the rumour that they were for Lt. Gen Montgomery's use, as his residence was also nearby, should a German invasion of Britain take place. There is no evidence to substantiate this, however.

These tunnels are continuously flooded, and it is only because of the heat wave and excessively long dry period that water levels have dropped substantially. Even so, we could only access these tunnels to a very short distance, and water levels were still up to five feet in places. For a good deal of the time, these tunnels are flooded to the roof.
