FAQs

Who are Underground Kent? Are you a club? Can I join?

Underground Kent is not a club or organisation – it’s a collection of people interested in exploring and documenting underground and military sites in Kent.

Great pictures – can I use them myself?

Of course….. with permission! Pictures can be used in your own projects or websites as long as the copyright owner has agreed and acknowledgements are made. For commercial use, standard fees apply. Contact admin@undergroundkent.co.uk for details. All images on this website have been resized – larger versions can be emailed on request.

Do you break into these places? Many of them appear to be sealed.

No, we work closely with many organisations and national bodies and have obtained permission to visit many ‘off limits’ sites. Other sites that have been explored may be abandoned and open to the elements, but at no time are these places ‘broken into’.

Aren’t you encouraging people to trespass, vandalise and take undue risks?

Definitely not! Contributors to this website share a passion for the history of these sites and encourage people to respect these places that are an important part of our heritage. If we can develop the same interest in other people and help to preserve and document buildings and tunnels that are at risk of development and / or damage, so much the better!

I’ve got lots of information to share – how do I go about it?

We also run a discussion forum, ‘UGK’, that interested people can join. Sign up, talk to like-minded people, share information and hopefully learn as well…. Visit the forum or click the link on the front page of this website.

I’ve discovered something underground on my property – can you tell me what it is?

Website contributors come in all shapes and sizes – some are historians and researchers, some are active (fully insured) cavers with training in abseiling, SRT, climbing and other useful skills. We also have close contact with official bodies, museums services, and other landowners who have been in a similar position to yourself. Research is also regularly carried out at The National Archives (TNA). Contact admin@undergroundkent.co.uk if you would like help or advice in exploring or researching something.

I’d like to visit some of these places myself – how do I start?

A good way to start is to join the Forum and introduce yourself to other members. Although we rarely organise trips and visits on an official basis, there are always unofficial trips where people meet up to chat and explore – get yourself known, let others know that you’re keen, but most importantly do some research yourself! Half the fun of this hobby is finding things out for yourself…

I’ve run out of booze – can you help?

No – but when you manage to get booze….. invite us round and we’ll help you drink it!
